Complex Nasal Reconstruction Restores Breathing

Treated by Dr. Sunil Choudhary , Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket

Country: Iraq

Saleh Salam Fahd from Basra Province, Iraq, had been struggling with a severe respiratory problem due to structural damage to his nose. He consulted Dr Sunil Choudhary - Chairman and Chief of Plastic Surgery - Max Institute of Reconstructive, Aesthetic Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket. On evaluation, it was found that both the internal and external nasal valves had collapsed, significantly affecting airflow. A detailed reconstructive plan was made. The internal nasal valve was repositioned and secured to the bone to restore stability. For the external valve, cartilage was harvested from the ear and used to rebuild and support the roof of the nostril, ensuring it remains open during breathing. The previous reconstruction was also refined by recreating the natural nostril crease for improved structure and appearance. Ten days after surgery, the patient experienced normal breathing and significant relief. This case highlights the precision and expertise required in functional nasal reconstruction to restore both airflow and form.
